Top 5 Indonesian Retail Conglomerate Strengthens Business Continuity with AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery

Retail Company

About the Customer

The customer is one of Indonesia's top 5 largest lifestyle retail conglomerates, operating more than 2,000 retail stores across the country for over 30 years. Listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange, the organization manages a diverse portfolio of over 150 international and local brands across fashion, sports, food & beverage, department stores, and lifestyle categories. With annual revenues exceeding USD 2 billion, the enterprise serves millions of consumers through both physical and digital retail channels, making operational continuity and IT resilience critical to daily business operations.

Customer Challenge

As the customer's retail operations expanded rapidly, the company faced increasing demands for highly available IT infrastructure supporting daily transactions, promotional campaigns, and omnichannel customer experiences. However, the customer lacked a modern disaster recovery (DR) strategy. Recovery times were measured in days rather than hours, and recovery point objectives were undefined — an unacceptable risk for an enterprise of this scale.

Without an effective resilience solution, the customer faced significant business risks including:

  • Estimated revenue impact of USD 100,000–200,000 per downtime incident during peak sales periods such as year-end promotions and flash sales
  • Up to 24 hours of potential transactional data loss, affecting financial reconciliation, audit compliance, and reporting accuracy
  • Operational disruption across critical systems with no automated failover mechanism, requiring manual intervention for every incident
  • Eroded customer trust and brand reputation, especially during high-traffic promotional events where downtime directly impacts customer experience

If left unaddressed, these risks would have continued to threaten the customer's market leadership position and shareholder value.

Partner Solution

PT Metrodata Electronics Tbk, an AWS Advanced Tier Services Partner, designed and implemented a cloud-based disaster recovery architecture using AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery (AWS DRS) deployed in the Asia Pacific (Jakarta) region, ap-southeast-3.

How the solution was delivered: Metrodata followed a four-phase methodology to ensure successful deployment with zero business disruption:

  1. Assessment Phase: Metrodata conducted a comprehensive discovery of the customer's 200+ critical servers, identifying application dependencies, network requirements, and recovery priorities across retail, logistics, and finance systems.
  2. Design Phase: Metrodata architected a secure, isolated DR environment using Amazon VPC with private subnets, ensuring replication traffic never traversed the public internet. IAM roles were configured for least-privilege access.
  3. Deployment Phase: Metrodata deployed AWS DRS agents across the customer's server fleet, configured continuous replication to Amazon EBS volumes, and established Amazon CloudWatch alarms for real-time monitoring of replication health and latency.
  4. Validation & Handover Phase: Metrodata executed three successful failover drills, validated RTO and RPO targets, documented runbooks, and trained the customer's internal IT team. Post-implementation, Metrodata provides quarterly DR drill execution, 24/7 managed support, and ongoing optimization.

The solution continuously replicates the customer's application data and server environments to AWS in near real-time, enabling rapid launch of recovery instances during any disruption event. This automated, scalable approach eliminates the operational overhead of traditional DR solutions.

Primary AWS services used: AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery (DRS), Amazon EC2, Amazon EBS, Amazon VPC, AWS IAM, Amazon CloudWatch, and Amazon S3 for backup storage.

Support services (pre and post implementation): Metrodata provided full support during pre-migration (assessment, planning, pilot testing) and post-implementation (ongoing monitoring, quarterly DR drills, incident response, and managed support) — ensuring continuous protection and operational readiness.

Results and Benefits

Following the implementation, the customer successfully achieved all targeted resilience objectives, and the solution is now in production, actively protecting business-critical systems.

Measurable outcomes:

  • Recovery Time Objective (RTO) reduced from 72+ hours to under 1 hour — a 98% improvement, minimizing downtime impact on revenue and customer experience
  • Recovery Point Objective (RPO) achieved within minutes — surpassing the 15-minute target and ensuring near-zero data loss
  • 100% of critical servers (200+ instances) now protected with continuous replication
  • DR infrastructure costs reduced by approximately 40% compared to the previously planned traditional standby infrastructure model
  • Sales campaign traffic increased by more than 120% during peak periods with zero unplanned downtime
  • Zero unplanned downtime incidents since deployment (12+ months in production)
  • Quarterly DR drills successfully validated with an average failover time of 45 minutes, exceeding the 90-minute target

By leveraging AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery, the customer strengthened its business continuity posture, minimized potential revenue loss during outages, and ensured a consistent customer experience during critical retail operations — directly supporting continued business growth and uninterrupted service for millions of Indonesian retail consumers.
